Beginner's Guide to Stained Glass Supplies

The seven things every beginner needs

1. Glass — start with two or three sheets: a clear cathedral for background (cathedral & clear glass) and one or two colored sheets (sheet glass index). A 8×10” sheet is plenty for a suncatcher.
2. Glass cutter — a simple pencil cutter or a pistol-grip cutter is all you need to start.
3. Breaking / running pliers — snap your cut lines cleanly (hand tools).
4. Copper foil — 7/32” foil wraps every piece edge (copper foil).
5. Solder & flux — 60/40 solder plus liquid flux (solder, chemicals).
6. Soldering iron — an 80–100 watt iron with a 1/4” tip (soldering irons).
7. A pattern — pick a beginner book like Introduction to Stained Glass (instruction books) or grab a pre-cut kit that skips cutting entirely.

Should you buy a grinder?

Pre-cut kits: learn assembly first

Pre-cut kits come with every piece cut and numbered — you learn foiling, soldering and finishing before ever touching a cutter. They are the fastest way to a finished piece: angel kits, bird kits, flower kits and lead castings.

Bevels make ordinary panels sparkle

Bevel clusters are pre-cut, pre-polished glass with angled edges that throw rainbows. Glue or foil them into a window panel — see small clusters, large clusters, and sidelight clusters. Mix any 3 or more from a series for the discount price.

Safety basics

• Wear safety glasses whenever cutting, grinding or soldering.
• Use lead-free solder (or tin-lead 50/50) in a ventilated room and wash hands after soldering.
• Keep glass edges away from bare skin — groze or grind edges smooth before foiling.
• Grinders need water in the reservoir — run them wet to keep glass dust down.
